The Forbes study sample was 657 self-made billionaires. The researchers analyzed such factors as their parents' professions, where they were educated, what happened in their early career efforts, and other life experiences that may have led to their ability to create such wealth.
Not surprising, a significant number of billionaires' parents were good at math and had careers as engineers, accountants and small business owners. An interesting discovery was that more billionaires were born in the fall, majority in September, and very few were born in the most popular birth month, December.
About 20% of the 292 self-made American billionaires listed in the most recent "World's Billionaires" have either never started or not completed their college education. This lack of a college degree is prevalent among such well known technology entrepreneurs as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, Larry Ellison, and Theodore Waitt. On the other hand, more than 55% of those who became billionaires through business in finance, were more likely to have a graduate degree and if they got their MBA it was probably from Harvard, Columbia or University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business.
Looking back at their early career stages, many of the billionaires had severe setbacks and losses creating a fear of failure. "Failure is a necessary condition for success, though not a sufficient one," is a statement told to Forbes in 1007 by Pharmaceutical billionaire R.J. Kirk.

How to Develop Positive Mental Attitude: The 5-Rules for Happiness Blueprint

No doubt that learning how to develop a positive mental attitude isn't something that happens overnight.
In truth, the power of habits is key to your success (or failure) - depending on what you focus on until habits form.
... Having said that, it's mandatory to make sure that the habits you form are "power habits" to enrich your life - financially, emotionally and spiritually.
And, it's never too late to change. In fact, I've been a victim to bad habits throughout the first half of my life.
For example, the other day I was asked if I could complete a particular task. I knew I'd done it before and could probably figure it out, but my psyche resorted to the "old habitual way" of responding... "I could try, but I'm usually not very good at that stuff".
This was a long time embedded BAD habit of mine, with the philosophy that I could make a bigger impression on folks if I gave the illusion that I didn't know what I was doing...
... In fact, if you can believe it, I used to even tell prospective bosses the stuff I could NOT do...
... NOT a good idea!
Unfortunately, I'd kept that philosophy for years, NEVER KNOWING how it was keeping me back from knowing how to develop positive mental attitude, and hence, keeping from achieving success.

Realizing the bad habits I'd created in the first half of my life has made me now DETERMINED to learn how to develop positive mental attitude in the later half.
Tony Robbins teaches that developing "power habits" through incantations can really help you achieve success through positive mental attitude. Why develop power habits? Because you want MORE out of life... NOT what you've always gotten.

Tony began shaping his own destiny when he happened to pick up a little booklet, "The Seven Day Mental Diet", wherein he discovered the secrets to positive mental attitudes.

1. Commit to never saying anything negative for seven days.
Of course, that's impossible to not slip on this one! You stub you toe and you say a
four-letter word. Happens all the time. But the idea here is to simply BE AWARE of what you're saying, and then quickly say "I didn't mean that", or "cancel" - out loud if you can.
2. Commit to an attitude of curiosity rather than judgment.
Too many of us tend to judge others to make us feel better about ourselves. Oddly enough, that really only makes you feel better for a very short time. If you can look at the jerk to just cut you off in differ light, "I wonder what's going on in his life to make him that angry"... you begin feeling TRULY GOOD about yourself on the long-term.
3. Commit to find something good about someone and get in the habit of giving complements.
This turns the focus away from YOU and onto someone who you like - and as a result, you feel GRATITUDE. The feeling of gratitude is the most powerful feeling in the Universe to stimulate positive mental attitudes.
4. Decide "not to be perfect".
Overachievers who really strive for perfection have a problem with this one. But think about it. If you're too caught up in appearing perfect to the rest of the world, then you'll never even try. No one gets it right the first time - no matter what "it" is. When you're OK with simply being yourself and not caring what others think - that's when you become a real inspiration to the rest of the world.
5. Have faith.
The power of intention has miraculous strength. Once you BELIEVE, you can ACHIEVE!

Positive Mental Attitude - Exploding the Myth

What's the difference between positive thinking and positive mental attitude? Because, as far as I can figure out, positive mental attitude is just a fancier name for a way of thinking that is becoming increasingly discredited. Your attitude is created by your subconscious mind - the part that stores your belief systems - your beliefs about how the world works and your place in it. You cannot force or superimpose an attitude on your subconscious mind unless you unlock your subconscious potential and rearrange your fundamental beliefs - and I don't know too many people who can do this as a matter of course.

The point I'm making is that positive mental attitude is a charade where we con ourselves into thinking happy thoughts on the basis that, no matter what life throws at us, we'll be OK - all will be well. This PMA gives us a resilience that can overcome the worst that life can throw at us. But it is my belief that human resilience is one of our biggest failings - it means that we'll "grin and bear it" and put up with almost anything before saying to ourselves "enough is enough, I've got to take action". A quick eye cast over history will show just how far dictators, warmongers, ordinary politicians and global conglomerates have been let go by the ordinary populace being too resilient. But it's OK, positive mental attitude will see us through!

Attitude comes from behaviour and behaviour is, generally speaking, reactive. Reactive behaviour does not come about as a result of reacting to the situation in which we find ourselves, our reactive behaviour (which often compounds an already bad situation) is dictated by what psychologists call our "stored knowledge" - the stuff that was stuffed into your subconscious mind during your formative years when, taken together, forms your belief system. You cannot force attitude on yourself by conscious decision - the subconscious mind will always win any battle with the conscious mind, hands down - every time. You cannot decide to be positive and then, as a result of that decision, you suddenly are positive.

I often hear people say "Well, I'm naturally a positive person or an optimist" - cool, I say, but that's the point I'm making - it comes naturally to you because it comes out, automatically, from your subconscious mind. Whereas positive thinking and/or positive mental attitude are things we think we are - not what we actually are. I recently received an email from someone who told me that there's a world of difference between positive thinking and positive mental attitude - that the Captain of the Titanic was a positive thinker but that it did him no good(!) - but that positive mental attitude will always see you through. I would suggest that it was the Captain of the Titanic's positive mental attitude that led to him firing up all the engines to set a new record for crossing the Atlantic - not positive thinking. You might say, what difference does it make which it was - and that's my point, we're playing with semantics. Either way, this positive conscious mind stuff is more trouble than it's worth.

Instead, you've got to rearrange your subconscious (we're not talking about rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic!) so that you don't try to force yourself to see a silver lining no matter how dark the cloud but that you see what's happening for what it is. This is completely different from "positive whatever" - it enables you do something that the normal person will almost never do in their entire life - act, take real action, instead of real action, armed with all the available facts as to what is actually happening right here, right now. If something bad is happening that you can do absolutely nothing about, then it is what it is. But that kind of scenario generally only arises if you're caught in the middle of a natural catastrophe. Almost everything else in life is the coincidence of a set of circumstances that provide us with the golden opportunity to act to better ourselves. This is language that is completely incomprehensible to the normal person who never, ever sees things for what they are, but perceives things for what they think they are - or in the case of positive thinking, for what they might like them to be.

Forget your positive thinking, forget your positive mental attitude - they could lead you up a dark alley and mug you and you'd be fine by that! The only state of mind worth being in is a clear and present state of mind. Clear - not congested by our "stored knowledge" that is decades out of date. Clear - of useless self-defeating thought. Clear - of useless self-delusionary thought (positive thinking). Clear - to simply see things for what they are. Present - in the here and now, unfettered by our subconscious formative years programming. Present - fully sensitized, using our five senses, to just this present moment. Present - which will give us presence, the one sure hallmark of successful people, of leaders, of people of action.

The most important thing we can do in our adult lives is to cultivate our ability to be clear and present - then not only will we not put up with what we don't have to put up with, we will see the opportunities lurking in the detail of what is actually happening, that the positive thinker will never spot.

Two sales people were sent to an island to sell shoes. Upon arriving, the first disappointedly sent a telegram back to the office. "Will return home tomorrow," the sales person wrote "no one here wears shoes." The second confronted with the same scenario, joyfully telegraphed back "please send me 10,000 shoes everyone here needs them!" Both sales people contemplated the same situation through completely different eyes. Clearly, the second was able to look on the bright side of things. He possesses the trait that, combined with hard work, always leads to growth and success.
A positive mental attitude. But what is attitude anyway? Simply put, it's the way you communicate your mood to others. Take a look at what researchers have discovered about the power of leader's moods. Leaders are more likely to transmit their moods to team members, and vice versa. Those who interact with belated enthusiastic or excited leaders are more positive than those who interact with distressed, hostile or nervous leaders. When you concentrate on what matters most, your perspective widens from the tree in front of you until you see the whole forest. Even through rough times, there are many things you can be thankful for. Make it a daily habit to identify specific things you're grateful for doing. 5 Steps To Developing A Positive Mental Attitude

I have been busy lately at work for the past week. I was faced with critical problems... that lead me to think and I was trying to have a positive mental attitude to find the solution to the problem.
And hey, you WILL be surprised how your gray matter (your brain) in your head will CHURN out countless of POSSIBLE solutions as you work on the problem. I tried them one by one... quite a lot DID NOT work, and finally, one worked... phew (what a relieve). So, after about a week of "struggling" (sorry... "overcoming"). Just think about it, that is what we were made for, by the Creator... our minds would not give up until a solution is found!
So, if you are facing a similar "road block" in your business or life, do not give up... It WILL help if you Have a Positive Mental Attitude.
Yes, I almost gave up... but looking back, all my fears (of failure) and negativity when I was solving the problem was in fact robbing me of my energy and how futile they all are... come to think of it. Would a more positive attitude helped me focus my energy and helped me face every difficult situation for the better?
So, how do we adopt and develop a positive mental attitude even when we are faced with a negative situation? When you are down and discouraged, how do you pick yourself up, or when you think you are facing an ultimate "brick wall" and you feel you are out of a solution or...when you are hit with negative responses from people causing your excitement and enthusiasm to slowly fade?
So, since I am more relaxed now, let us talk about how we can develop a positive mental attitude in life.
Definition: A positive mental attitude is believing, accepting, hoping and working toward a good result in every situation. A positive mental attitude is constructive, while a negative mental attitude is destructive. It means spending creative energies on finding ways that things can be done rather than exhausting emotional and mental powers dwelling on the ways things cannot be done. It means turning a problem into a solution. It means developing what I call THOUGHT DISPLACEMENT.
Let me explain... When you have a negative thought in your mind and it is nagging and pulling you down. What is really happening is that you are focusing on the thing you do not want to happen and in doing so you are, you are in fact focusing on the catastrophe and not the solution! Thought displacement changes all of that; but it requires discipline and imagination.
So, let me share with you 5 steps to developing a positive mental attitude:
1. Imagine, visualize and keep thinking of things that you would like or prefer to happen for your problem.
Imagine your problem is SOLVED. Use your imagination... you can do it. For example... if you are fearful that your project or presentation will fail, just remove those thoughts. Imagine and visualize your million dollar marketing presentation went excellently... and you CLOSED that deal!! Imagine earning $500 per day online... and your mind will think only of solutions to difficult problems. When the negative thought returns, challenge it and replace it with a solution.
2. Pursue wisdom. Have a habit of always learning.
Seek wisdom... pursue it. If it means reaching out for help from a wiser person or friend, just ASK for help. Read to find if others have also faced similar problems. We can learn from others. Read life stories of people who have overcome incredible difficulties. When a negative mental attitude dwells in your mind, go read a book about real life stories of people overcome. In so doing, you relate positively that they not only survived but they went on to WIN!
3. Affirm out loud daily with a positive attitude.
Say aloud to yourself "I will solve my problem today" or "I will earn $500/day in my online business". You could write down your affirmations in a notebook which tells you clearly what you are going to do. If you are facing a "low self-esteem" problem, affirm who you are and what relationships, responsibilities you have for my life goals. With this daily check, you will keep being positive and highly motivated. Alternatively, record an audio recording of yourself, or find a recording that will help you to affirm your goals, responsibilities and self esteem daily.
4. Have a great attitude! Act and behave motivated even if you do not feel like it.
Quite often we let our subconscious mind dictate our attitudes and take us off the right track. Have you heard that "Your attitude determines your altitude in life". Keep a right attitude. The key for high achievers and highly motivated individuals is their attitude. Although it may seems difficult, remember to keep a right attitude... doing what is right; acting and behaving motivated even in difficult situations. Eventually, our minds and spirits will respond positively.
5. Do something so that your mental or physical resources can be stretched.
When you are dwelling on negative thoughts, do something so that your mental or physical resources can be stretched. Go for a swim or jog. Learn to play a musical instrument, or cook up a storm in the kitchen preparing dinner for the whole family! Learn a new sport like golf or scuba diving, or riding a horse!! Learn to blog... if you do not have a blog... why not!! You will find your mind and body refreshed by the experiences.
Look for the positive in every situation. If you do, you will definitely see the light (the solution) and find opportunities for growth, learning and experience. Remember to use affirmations like:
* I can do it
* I will succeed
* It's an opportunity
* I will find out
* It will work
* It will help me grow

The Power of Habit

Aristotle once said, "we are what we repeatedly do" and this shows the power of habit. If we are repeatedly doing things that lead to greater success, then we will be successful but if we are repeatedly doing things that hinder our success then we will not get what we want in life.
Create a Habits List
Before creating a to do list think about creating a 'habits list', this is a list of the habits you want to create and a tracker to help you track those habits. Let's say for example that it is your goal to lose weight. In order to lose weight you need to exercise regularly and so onto your habit tracker you would put exercise and then each day that you exercise you would tick off that item on your habit tracker and know that you have taken a step closer to your goal. If you just had to exercise once though it wouldn't be much help so you need to make a habit of exercising at least three times a week.
How Long Does It Take to Form a Habit?
Some people say 21 days, others say you should aim for three times that amount. Personally, I think it is better to aim for three times that amount because if you give yourself a break too early then you may find that the habit is easily broken and it is too easy to fall back into bad habits. By challenging yourself to practice this habit for longer you are ensuring that it becomes a part of your life and you are less likely to give it up as it becomes part of you.
Breaking Bad Habits
In addition to creating good habits, if you want to really achieve success then you also need to break bad habits that are hindering you from becoming all you can be. Let's go back to the weight loss example and say you have a habit of getting take-aways for dinner every night. If you want to lose weight then exercising in itself is not going to be enough, you need to learn to develop healthier eating habits and that means breaking the bad habit of getting take-aways all the time. Learn how to do meal preparation and plan healthy foods that will promote weight loss.
"We are what we repeatedly do" and so we need to create habits that are going to help us achieve success. It is not enough to simply do something once and hope it will bring you success, you need to do it repeatedly. Create habits that will help you become the person you want to be.

Why You Must Get Rid Of False Expectations

A fulfilled life is a result of successive complete and fulfilled days. If you are going to have a fruitful day, it is important that you have the day properly outlined and planned out. Of the many things you need in the right place are expectations: expectations for a positive fruition for plans and objectives. These are expectations we impose on ourselves and are sometimes imposed on us by other people.
Expectations have had a great bearing on how much I have accomplished, they have been the core of my belief and trust that things will happen as desired. Because I have been able to live each day successfully and have accomplished each day according to expectation, life has been a bundle of joy.
However, it has been of utmost importance to define and distinguish between realistic and unrealistic expectations. These can also be termed as true and false expectations. It is worth mentioning that, although truthful expectations help yield positive results, false expectations are a constraint to fulfillment of any endeavor.
While brooding over positive expectations is fundamental, it is of equal importance that false expectations are gotten rid of if achievement is going to be attained. My experience and research has identified an inexhaustible number of false expectations, this helped me get rid of all such hopes. Here now are some common false expectations and why it was important that I get rid of them.
The expectation that everyone should like me.
The expectation that the world must be fair.
The expectation that all my days are supposed to be sunny, that is, a storm will never come.
The expectation of never being anxious or depressed.
The expectation of always being in the driving seat- always in control and always knowing what is going to happen next.
The expectation that people will be perfect.
False expectations made me take up a level of control that I really did not have in given circumstances. This led to considerable failures and disappointments along the way. This denied me the chance to learn from others because, in my mind, I was on top of things and yet was not. I did not let those who knew better control things. Nonetheless, those days are gone and I know better now. I now know only to control the things I can and to let other players act their roles.
Disappointments literally make the heart sick. False expectations when fully mature breed disappointments which in turn sicken the heart. Such emotions are never good for anything, worse still for success and fruition of goals. There is a predisposition in man to repeatedly feel disappointed when their hopes are not met.
False hopes are heavy loads to shoulder. It does not really matter if they are really personal or about others, they are simply heavy to carry. You may want to tone down those expectations because they place unrealistic demands on ourselves, colleagues, etc. A tendency to act as if others "should" just live and give in to our expectations is a common feature of false hopes. They "Should" just know what my desires are is bad for business.
Further, false expectations cause the hopeful individual to have some preconceived blueprint of how things should be without really considering others. People develop an "if- then" syndrome which dictates how things should be done. This is actually a very common erroneous assumption.
To hold on to false expectations is to obstruct the knack to pursue what matters most in life. For example, those who expect NEVER to make a mistake won't actually take any form of a risk in life. And since they will not take risks, it is impossible to step out and pursue the things they care for.
Unfortunately, some expectations are not feasible. They are simply not practical. Often, they might appear like reasonable and viable expectations but are in fact not. From a distance, they may even give the impression of being fair, realistic and reasonable but in reality, such prospects cannot truly be met. Worse still, such expectations only create additional problems, far worse than they solve. For instance, the expectation that young children should always be tip-top in terms of their behavior is far-fetched. A colleague of mine shared his experience, "I had set all the appropriate limits and rules, and for some time they were all fairly-behaved children. But in my efforts and quest to further enforce this expectation, I experienced disappointments, and only roused conflict with the kids besides other problems.
False expectations are always grounds for loss because they set you and other people up for disappointment. Reality is that, there is no life without expectations, however, I choose to hold on to realistic and measurable expectations.
What is true is that I cannot please everyone nor can I make everyone like me. It can't just happen, I will be naïve in trying to make it happen.
To even start wishing I could control all the aspects of my world in order to ensure things function consistently in the most harmonious way is like fighting the wind. The world cannot be all fair and I can only control so much. The rest is about accepting and moving on.
Well, false expectations almost made a stiff naked person out of me, I was becoming rigid to the opinions and inputs of others. I could leave no room for change for situations or let other have a go at matters.
All in all, to get rid of false expectations, it is imperative to arrest all unrealistic hopes, thoughtfully and with seriousness. It will be key to reflect on the potential effect of the expectation and practice consideration for others as they are built. Being flexible and allowing for external impact is the way to go for getting rid of false expectations.
False expectations are a menace and are unhealthy, they should be gotten rid of no matter how hard it may be. It is possible to create a whole set of beliefs, motivations, etc. that will assist you and others.

Revealed! 6 Steps to Getting What You Want

Do you wonder how some people get what they want out of life while others do not? You must have experienced that some of your successful friends are not as talented as you are! There is a long list of reasons for your life not being everything you want it to be. If you understand the common mistakes behind this, you can certainly increase the possibility of getting what you want.
CHANGE YOU LIFE BY SIMPLY AVOIDING THE MOST COMMON PITFALLS LISTED BELOW;
1. No clarity about what you want: You being unhappy about your current situation only means that you don't want what you have. It, however, hardly means that you know what you want.
  • Solution: Have clarity i.e. DECIDE what you want. Start by creating a list of what you want so that you can then structure your life around attaining those things.
2. You are Not prioritizing your wants: Once you list out your 'wants', ask yourself whether you really want - say a hefty bank balance or an athlete's physique? Or would you rather watch TV shows with a drink & some awesome tasty chips by your side every night?
  • Solution: We need to understand the real issue here. It is not what you WANT but what you are willing to GIVE UP FOR YOUR WANT charts your course. E.g. a hefty bank balance requires dedicated smart work spread over a few years before the results start bringing you multiple streams of income whereas getting an athlete's physique would mean you have to hit the gym consistently & work with your trainer. In either case, you would need to give up on certain things such as giving up some free time & giving up certain foods. Ask yourself how much you are willing to give up to get what you want. Answer to this question will tell how much it means to you.
3. Lack of focus from you: Our life today is full of Digital Distractions. It is easier to get forgetful now than ever before. We can get immersed in our virtual social networks for hours together losing focus of important tasks & even forgetting some of our daily chores.
  • Solution: Make it a habit of reminding yourself of your wants at least twice daily. Read & visualize your goals while you lie in your bed once each in the morning & at night. Let your affirmation about your wants remain fresh in your mind by reminding yourself of them daily. This will assure you of focus on your wants.
4. You are not ready for the laborious hard work: Almost every prestigious accomplishment is achieved with more than 90% laborious hard-work. For example, sport's Greats like Usain Bolt or Micheal Phelps have seldom missed their practice sessions right after a competition. They have practiced their most fruitful skills thousands of times relentlessly during training. An analogy of iceberg is aptly suited here wherein their successful careers can be equated with the visible - minuscule - portion of an iceberg whereas their relentless practice sessions can be equated with the hidden - many folds larger than the visible - portion of the iceberg. This can be best understood by the fact that while Usain Bolt has actually run less than 115 Seconds for his Olympic Medals, he has invested 15 years of his life to achieve the success in those 115 seconds.
  • Solution: Accept the fact that much of your goal cannot be attained without sustained actions which won't be fun or exciting & even be mundane. These repetitive actions, however, will certainly benefit you & help you inch closer to your wants.
5. You don't focus on the processes: Having an obsession of acquiring an athlete's physique is not necessarily a solution to get one. The key is in familiarizing with & adopting habits that will help you reach your goal. While an obsession is an intense wish about a certain achievement, the achievement itself requires action which is planned carefully & executed meticulously.
  • Solution: First of all create a watch list of habits that will guarantee you successful achievement of your goals. Let it be in as much detail as possible so that you don't miss on any opportunity. Share it with your Coach alongwith your goals to ensure you are on the right track. Refine & finalize the list of actionable habits. Thereafter, your real challenge is to incorporate those finalized actionable habits into your day-to-day life. Start with baby steps & continue making progressive changes along the way until the habits become ingrained in your everyday life.
6. You want super-fast results: Rome wasn't built overnight. It takes time to achieve success at anything. Once your path is charted out, you might find that better results will start showing only after you have crossed the midway distance. This can be compared to rolling a big boulder down the hill. It can take huge amount of energy initially to get it moving from its place, but it gathers momentum quickly with minimal efforts once it is on its course.
  • Solution: Trust your own action plan more than your emotions. Remember always that your carefully planned action needs meticulous execution. If you are progressing on your charted course each day, you will eventually get to your destination - your want. Persist with your plan without giving in to your frustration. Have patience & faith in your action plan & it will show positive results.
